Would You Compromise Your Christian Beliefs For Convenience?

So Pat Robertson has endorsed Rudolph Guiliani.  He believes the friend he met on an airline while en route from Israel in the 80's is going to be the 44th president.  By endorsing Guiliani, the 700 Club anchor is asserting one of the following to be true:  Robertson is clearly contradicting his faith and what he preaches or what he preaches is in fact the real contradiction of his true self.  Only God and Robertson know.

Isn't it true that the name Pat Robertson is synonymous to evangelical Christianity in the United States and perhaps the world?  If the answer is yes, it is true that this man of God has put his Christian virtues in the back seat, allowing national security to drive him to his choice for president.  He represents many who will be "Christians" as long as it is convenient, only to compromise their beliefs when push comes to shove.

In his endorsement speech, the founder of the Christian Coalition of America hailed Giuliani as the man "who is not afraid of what lies ahead", clearly pointing to the challenges this country faces with extremists.  I am troubled by this not because I am a democrat but because I am a Christian.  It goes without saying that the real challenge the country faces is with religious leaders like Robertson who don't practice what they preach, who would flip flop for convenience.  As a believer, I am of the conviction that the most pressing challenge America faces now is more spiritual then physical.

If every Christian in the world were like Robertson, Christendom would be very pathetic.  Giuliani is a man whose ideologies include what the Bible forbids-abortion and homosexuality.  He has doubts about the veracity of the Bible as far as its inerrancy.  Yet the man of God who preaches the Bible favors him for security reasons.  What a self-contradiction!  Imagine having a president who allows women to kill their children before they are born.  That doesn't even sound American.  What about divorce and remarriage?  As a so-called conservative, Robertson would be quick to denounce this dominant American lifestyle, yet he embraces a leader who is working on his third marriage, and who has told two other women in the past he loved them till death "do us part".  I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want him for a marriage counselor.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to credibility issues.  Is Robertson as credible now as he was before he stuck his nose into politics behind the pulpit?  Should Christians be listening to him?  Should non-Christians who need salvation turn to Robertson for help?  What about the 700 Club?  Is it about God or politics; money or morals?  If you ask me, I don't waste my time watching that talk show or the John Hagee Ministries because whenever the Word of God is interspersed with politics, I smell problem.

This is a man who makes political predictions that never come to pass.  From a 2004 landslide election victory for George Bush to a 2006 Tsunami-like disaster in the US, his prophecies have for the most part proven to be without divine inspiration.  God has never promised anything that never happened.  Now did God really tell him that He struck Ariel Sharon with stroke because Sharon had moved Israel out of the Gaza?  The ridiculous natures of his propositions are very obvious, even to the most naïve person.  Robertson came out to apologize and give excuses later when he suggested that we should take out Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez.  My interpretation of it was Robertson was not sorry for his statement as much as he was for embarrassing himself, the church and this country.  Is it his prerogative to decide who lives and who dies?  Since when did he become God?  The Bible says, "… with the heart man believes and with the mouth, confession is made".  That serves to say the mouth is but the channel through which we voice what we harbor in our hearts, sometimes over a protracted period of time.  There is no room for a slip of tongue.

Search the Scripture for yourselves and try every spirit.  Don't be gulled by just anyone's manipulative schemes.
